This Week’s Shows 1.20.17
Sometimes variety can be seem quite strange when you step back and take it at face value. Each night this week I’ve found myself in very different musical situations. Tonight I’ll be putting on leather pants, full makeup, and a leather vest to play a rock show, last night I did a really great Billy Joel tribute show with David James Guidice, the night before that was Cats, Cabaret, and other super traditional Broadway fare. Tomorrow I’ll be doing super quite small group jazz. (our motto for that band is — ‘You have to be a pretty good drummer to beat no drummer at all!’ Earlier this week was everything from Elvis impersonations to a boogie piano show. Looking back on it, it seems a little strange. As someone who grows bored rather quickly, I generally like all of the variety, but it does seem strange sometimes.
Lately I’ve been thinking I’d like to focus on the small group jazz stuff for a while. We’ve been developing a very focused thing here with this trio. Usually I play soprano and the rest of the group is piano and bass. We’re all trying to pull these warm beautiful tones out of our instruments and play very melodically. Without the drums, the bass and I are able to do more direct interaction than we might otherwise find ourselves doing, which gives the music a different rhythmic feel. I’d really like to develop this more but it looks like it will mostly be a side project for now…next week is starting to look pretty bizarre already…
