Mykonos and Santorini

Lately I’ve had the good fortune to visit two really beautiful Greek islands, Mykonos and Santorini. I’ve been to each of them a couple of times and always had a great time.

white buildings

Both islands are very dry and rocky and all of the buildings are painted white and blue. I think if you went into a hardware store and asked for another color of paint you would generate a lot of confusion. The square white buildings make a really interesting contrast with the rocky surroundings.

walls on hillsMykonos is very rugged and there are walls made of stones stretching all over many of the hills. I’m not really sure why they are there as there don’t seem to be any animals but they are pretty cool looking.

on atvRenting atvs in Mykonos is super fun and super cheap. For 20 euros a day and a couple of liters of gas you can get an atv for the entire day and ride all over the island.

coveThere are a bunch of cool coves and beaches to explore. To get to some of them you have to do some off-roading. Others are just off the main roads. However, navigating can be a bit confusing.

navagational difficulties

Each beach is quite different. Some are rocky and without any structures, others are sandy and have cafes built on them.

mykonos beachOn this beach on the windward side of the island there were a bunch of kite surfers. We drove in the sand here and Mike managed to flip his atv over on himself. Luckily, with the exception of my camera screen there were no injuries.

windward beachSantorini is built high on a cliff overlooking the remnants of a volcano. The island is ring shaped from when the volcano erupted.

santorini from afarTo get up to the top of the cliff where the town is you can either take a gondola or ride some donkeys up. The views from the top are pretty incredible. The buildings are all white and blue and built all the way down the sides of the cliffs.

greek domes

All over Greece they serve half liters of wine in these awesome copper cups. They’re super cheap and super delicious!
